Meet the Judges
The Great British Slate Off is judged by a panel of highly respected roofing professionals, chosen for their expertise, experience and passion for the craft.
The judges represent different areas of the roofing industry, bringing together technical knowledge, practical skills and years of hands-on experience. Their role is to carefully assess each entry, recognising the highest standards of slate roofing, craftsmanship and attention to detail.
Together, they ensure the competition is judged fairly and celebrate the skill and dedication of the talented roofers taking part.
Matt Timby
Been slating ornamental designs since travelling to Karlsruhe, Germany to learn under the German Masters in 2016. Other accolades include:
- Skillbuild Gold medal Winner RST 2009 and 2010
- IFD Young roofers world championship Gold medal 2010
- National Federation of Roofing Contractors Dedication to training award
- Princes Foundation for the Built Environment Master Craftsman 2010
- IFD Presidents Prize Winner 2012 (Switzerland)
- Skillbuild Judge RST 2012 to Present
- NFRC Trainer for IFD young roofers world championships 2020 to present.
- Multiple National roofing awards in Slating, Tiling and Leadwork categories
- Master Craftsman awarded by Worshipful Company of Tylers and Bricklayers 2023.
Andrew Rowlands
NFRC Vice President
Andy has worked within the roofing industry for over 40 years, is a Director of Rowlands Roofing Ltd, CoRE Hereford and has been an NFRC Board Member since 2018 he is also the current NFRC vice president. Andy is a recognised Master Craftsman and previous winner of the IFD International Roof of the Year Award. He is Deputy Chair of the NFRC Heritage Committee and Chair of the NFRC Slating and tiling technical committee.
Andy also represents NFRC on the IFD Pitched Roofing Commission and the IFD Training Commission.
